Italian style gardens became popular in the mid-19th century, and were still being created up to the eve of the First World War. They were something of a reaction against the naturalistic or parkland style which had been dominant in Britain since Lancelot Capability Brown and consisted of a number of features. These included formal designs with a symmetrical layout of shaped beds, known as parterres, often surrounded by low beech hedges, fountains, urns, statuary and stone balustrading.
