Home of the Drake family from 1581 when Sir Francis Drake returned from his adventures and bought it from Sir Richard Granville. Since 1951 the National Trust has administered the property with Plymouth City Museum. Originally it was a Cistercian monastery until the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII in 1539.
