Hardwick Hall is one of Britain's finest Elizabethan houses built for Elizabeth, Dowager Countess of Shrewsbury, who moved in in October 1597.

Brodick > The Hall and gardens are a statement of wealth and power and have largely been retained by the National Trust in their true Elizabethan style.
Brodick > Bess maried four times, each time becoming richer.
Brodick > After the death of her 4th husband, the Earl of Shrewsbury, she had the new hall built and moved out of the Old Hall, which stands now as a ruin close by.
Brodick > The initials "ES" are to be seen everywhere, just so that everyone knew who she was.
Brodick > The gate house to the new hall.
Brodick > The Old Hall, built it is said after an argument between Bess and her husband in the family home of Chatsworth, so that she could move out.

Brodick > The walled formal gardens contain some fine borders, but unfortunately the roses first flush was pretty much finished when we visited.
Brodick > This field is known as the Wine Glass Field. If you take a look at the "Map This" view you will see why. The animals to be seen in the distance are some of the rare breeds of cattle and sheep kept here.
Brodick > There are some 300 acres of parkland surrounding the house.
