Hartland Abbey, North Devon : Built in the 12th century it remained as a monastery for some 400 years. Now the home to the Stucley family, and unusually has been passed down through the female line three times, and has never been sold.
The gardens are still being redeveloped after becoming overgrown after all the gardeners went off to the First World War. Gertrude Jekyll was a regular visitor and has had some considerable influence on the gardens.

Trevarno Gardens, Cornwall : There has been an estate on this site since around 1245 and has been owned by many notable families over the years. It was saved from being broken up in 1995 when a company was set up to purchase all 750 acres and to restore it to its former glory.

Forde Abbey, Somerset : Forde Abbey was founded as a Cistercian monastery at around 1150 close to the River Axe, and it continued as such for the next 400 years until the Dissolution of monasteries under Henry V111 when it was handed over to the Crown. After that there have been a succession of owners, many absentee landlords, until 1905 when the property was acquired by the Roper family who have owned it since. They have been responsible for  most of the developments in the house and grounds that make it such a pleasure to visit today.

Athlehampton House, Dorset : An Elizabethan mansion with many additions and removals over the centuries to leave you with a delightfully quirky houseto wander around. In the house one of the highlights was the Gallery at the top of the West Wing which displays works of art by the artist Maria Marevna Vorobyev, known simply as 'Marevna'. The gardens are pleasant for a walk around after sampling the very good restaurant.

Abbotsbury Tropical Gardens, Dorset : These magnificent gardens were created as far back as 1765 by the first Countess of Ilchester  as a kitchen garden for her nearby castle. Since then they have grown to more than 20 acres and contain many rare plants collected from around the world. The gardens were restored after the great storm of 1990 and now provide a wonderful day out.

The Garden House, Buckland Monachorum : An 8 acre garden on the edge of Dartmoor close to Buckland Monochorum. There are several gardens in one here so that it seems much bigger than it actually is. A wonderful place for a quiet wander around for 2 or 3 hours
