The swannery at Abbotsbury is unique in being the only place that you are able to walk through a colony of mute swans. The Swannery was established by Benedictine Monks who built a monastery at Abbotsbury during the 1040's, and used the swans as a source of food. The monks have long gone, but the swans are still here under the stewardship of the Ilchester Estates.
