Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary : On the edge of Dartmoor close by Buckfast Abbey is the delightful Buckfast Butterflies and Devon Otter Sanctuary. It's a lovely place to pass an hour or two observing the antics of the mostly rescued otters, and seeking out the butterflies and other creatures in the tropical house. Where possible the otters are returned to the wild after they have recovered their health, although a few pairs are now resident but seem very happy with their lot.

Abbotsbury Swannery, Dorset : The swannery at Abbotsbury is unique in being the only place that you are able to walk through a colony of mute swans. The Swannery was established by Benedictine Monks who built a monastery at Abbotsbury during the 1040's, and used the swans as a source of food. The monks have long gone, but the swans are still here under the stewardship of the Ilchester Estates.
