Dartington Hall, Devon : In 1925 when Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst first started their great experiment in rural regeneration, they too wished to create a garden at Dartington, a garden that would value the works of previous generations. The garden they created would adorn the landscape rather than compete for attention. It would, above all, be an intimate personal garden which they were keen to share with others. Designers who have made important contributions include Tipping, Farrand and Cane. An Excellent garden in the college grounds; it seems to be a closely guarded secret that they are open to the public for free (£2 donation requested, and well worth it).

Buckland Abbey, Devon : Home of the Drake family from 1581 when Sir Francis Drake returned from his adventures and bought it from Sir Richard Granville. Since 1951 the National Trust has administered the property with Plymouth City Museum. Originally it was a Cistercian monastery until the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII in 1539.

Coleton Fishacre, Devon : A luxuriant South Devon garden by the sea in a secluded coastal valley. Just across the River Dart from Dartmouth it's a real joy to visit with the added attraction of an Arts & Crafts house with Art Deco style interiors. Now looked after by the National Trust since 1982, it was formerly a holiday home built for Rupert D'Oyly Carte, and there is true 1920s elegance and a sense of Gilbert & Sullivan.

Crystal Palace Park, London : When Crystal Palace Park was constructed in the 1850s, it was arguably the world's first 'theme park'. The giant Palace held technological wonders of the modern world, while walking along the central pathway took the visitor to the prehistoric landscape of the lower lakes and dinosaur park.

The dinosaurs caused a sensation when the Park was opened as they were designed and built before Darwin's 'Origin of Species' was published. They were the first life sized replicas of the prehistoric reptiles ever built.

The dinosaurs were recently restored by Bromley Council following a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The £4 million programme brought together a team of palaeontologists and landscape architects. Original colours were restored, replacements made and models reconstructed to match historic records of the original designs.

We only saw a small part of the park and will go back for more some time.

Your Bio

Welcome to my photo galleries, please feel free to browse around.

I have had an interest in photography for much of my life, but the enthusiasm was rekindled a few ago years when I bought a digital camera.

I started by using a FinePix 2600Zoom which I found produced pretty good pictures under reasonably normal conditions. Since discovering the wealth of talent exhibited around the net I realised that I needed to upgrade to something which would give me a bit more control. And so I bought a Canon PowerShot S1IS which I now feel I am getting the hang of, although there is still some way to go.

Most of the photographs here are a reflection of my travels, now mostly around the UK, although I have recently started to trawl through my pre digital photos stored in many boxes scanning some of them and trying to make them presentable. Some of the later galleries are of some of them.

Please add your comments, good or bad, to any of the pictures as any help would be welcomed.

If you have photos of your own why not share them by setting up your own galleries and save yourself 5$ by entering the voucher code d8jv68ZugFaTP when you sign up.
